What are the main challenges in AdBlue® quality control?

In today’s automotive industry, especially for diesel engines, reducing harmful emissions is of utmost importance. AdBlue®—an aqueous urea solution also known as AUS32—plays a key role in this process by enabling selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Despite its wide usage and significance, the quality control of AdBlue® is often underestimated, which can seriously affect the efficiency of SCR systems and harm the environment.

The importance of high-quality AdBlue®

Using products that do not meet strict quality standards can significantly decrease the effectiveness of SCR systems and damage vehicle components, leading to increased environmental pollution. Poor-quality AdBlue® can cause nozzle clogging, crystallization, and other issues that result in system failures and elevated emissions.

Main challenges in quality control

Despite the existence of international standards such as ISO 22241, AdBlue® quality control faces several challenges:

  • Insufficient regulatory oversight: In Bulgaria, there is no specialized institution monitoring AdBlue® quality as there is for fuels. This allows substandard products to enter the market, causing catalyst malfunctions and additional costs for users.

  • Raw material crisis: The global market has experienced a raw material supply crisis, prompting some manufacturers to use alternative, often lower-quality materials, including agricultural-grade urea. This increases the risk of low-quality AdBlue® being sold.

  • Lack of control over storage and transportation: Improper storage and transport can contaminate or alter AdBlue®’s chemical composition, reducing its effectiveness.

The role of BAMIA in ensuring quality

We at the Bulgarian Association of Manufacturers and Importers of AdBlue® (BAMIA) were founded to help regulate and ensure product quality in the Bulgarian market. We work on creating and enforcing rules that guarantee only high-quality additives are available—essential for SCR systems in diesel engines. We also promote the use of licensed AdBlue® and raise consumer awareness of its importance.

Quality control of AdBlue® is essential for the efficient operation of emission reduction systems in diesel engines and for environmental protection. Through joint efforts from manufacturers, importers, and consumers, and with BAMIA’s active role, we can ensure the Bulgarian market offers only high-quality AdBlue®—contributing to a cleaner environment and more reliable vehicle performance.
