AdBlue® is an essential component in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems used in modern diesel vehicles. It helps reduce harmful emissions by converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. To maintain its quality and effectiveness, AdBlue® must be stored correctly, especially during the cold winter months. Improper conditions can lead to quality deterioration and unnecessary costs!
Optimal Storage Temperature
AdBlue® freezes at around –11°C. After thawing, the product retains its properties as long as it has not been contaminated. The recommended storage temperature is between +5°C and +25°C. Avoid extreme temperatures—very low temperatures cause crystallization, while very high temperatures accelerate urea decomposition. Ideally, the product should be stored in a dry, ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes.
What to Do If AdBlue® Freezes
Freezing does not mean the product is damaged. Allow it to thaw naturally at room temperature, without using heaters or open flames. Once it fully liquefies, check if the liquid is clear and transparent. If there is discoloration or sediment, do not use it.
Containers and Protection from Contamination
AdBlue® is sensitive to dust, oils, and fuels. Therefore, it should be stored in specialized containers made of materials suitable for urea solutions—usually plastic resistant to urea. Metal containers are not recommended because they may react with the solution and alter its chemical composition. Always keep containers tightly closed and avoid contact with dirty tools or other liquids. If transferring AdBlue® from one container to another, make sure to use clean and certified transfer systems.
Precautions When Refilling in Winter
Before refilling, check whether the liquid is frozen or cloudy and whether the tank is clean. Use only certified AdBlue® that meets ISO 22241 standards. Products of questionable origin or poor quality can clog injectors and damage the SCR system.
Monitor the Shelf Life
AdBlue® has a shelf life of 12 to 18 months, depending on storage conditions. In winter, when consumption is often lower, carefully check labels and use older batches first. A product that has been stored too long or under improper conditions may lose its effectiveness.
Proper winter storage of AdBlue® ensures the product maintains its quality and supports reliable SCR system performance. Maintain stable temperatures, use suitable containers, and rely only on trusted suppliers. This protects both your vehicle and the environment.
